WINNER – Mike Goebel – Mater Dei High School | Evansville, IN

Mike Goebel’s story and the story of Mater Dei High School have been knitted together for the last 56 years. Mike began his life with Mater Dei as a two-sport high school athlete in the 1960s. After graduating in 1970, he returned to Evansville, Indiana, to serve as a full-time teacher and coach in 1975 and has been there ever since. Through the past 48 years, Mike has exemplified what it means to show the spirit of a coach, impacting the lives of countless students and student-athletes by teaching them lessons that go far beyond the classroom and the field of competition. At the core of Mike’s character is his servant attitude. As the ninth of 17 children, he quickly learned the importance of serving one another and has carried that with him to this day. Just as impressive as his success in teaching students off the field is the success he has achieved on it. Throughout his time at the helm of Mater Dei’s football and wrestling teams, he has won 14 total Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state championships and coached 21 individual state champions in wrestling.

View Winner & Finalists

WINNER – Independence High School | Thompson’s Station, TN

The Game Day experience at Independence High School is the ultimate expression of student-led school spirit. The annually elected flag runners spearhead the game day experience by working directly with teachers, administrators and the student council for each event to coordinate a unique student section theme for each game and customized cheers and activities for pep rallies. Game days begin with music in the commons for students to build the hype before each game. By the end of 3rd period on game days, the band, cheer, dance and flag runners lead a student-wide pep rally that encourages everyone to come dressed for the specific theme for that game. Following the final bell, students prepare for the various pre-game activities, including the Indy Walk, which features the band, cheer and dance team leading the football team from the school through a crowd of fans to the locker room. The games are filled with chants, cheers, dances and songs, and the band only stops playing for cheerleaders, student chants and the Independence HS offense. This game day experience has created an incredible atmosphere at Independence games and knit the Eagle community together.

The team has been all in since day one, always thinking of new ways to reach more people and raise awareness. From participating in the St. Jude Walk, sending awareness letters to friends and family, and hosting a St. Jude Cheer and Dance Clinic for preschool through eighth-grade students, Spiritleaders are determined to make a difference in a child’s life. The cheer routine taught at the St. Jude Clinic is performed at the Los Alamitos St. Jude football game where the entire crowd is dressed in yellow shirts and the Spiritleaders and clinic participants wear yellow bows, hold up posters, and collect donations. The entire school participates in the week-long event leading up to the football game, including dress-out days, yellow ribbons, and fun activities to encourage donations. Unlike the brightly colored 90s throwback theme of the 21-22 yearbook, this year, Vista Ridge High School’s yearbook features a clean, more traditional theme featuring the school’s colors: Carolina Blue and Black. VISTA, the title of the yearbook, grew with the concept of capturing the individuality of every student, teacher, and staff member at the school. The yearbook draws visual inspiration from magazine design, incorporating large photographs and stories from extraordinary people around the campus. VISTA is organized chronologically from the summer camps to spring graduation, featuring the ins and outs of all the clubs, sports, and classes. The Ridgeline staff worked together to capture the perfect cover image of the school mascot, Wolfie, by putting time in before the beginning of the school year. One of the main taglines is “Black, Blue, and You” which captures the school spirit and allows everyone at the school to stand out and leave a lasting legacy. From beginning to end, every page of VISTA bleeds school pride.
